Phuket School of Music presents, From Russia with Love: An evening of Russian Romances and chamber music featuring acclaimed soprano, Ms Natalia Kumkova with guest artists Mr Alexander Korniev, violin, and Mr Kerim Vergazov, piano.

Artist Profile:

 

Ms Natalia Kumkova

 

Ms Natalia Kumkova began her studies in pianoforte at a local music school in Leningrad. She graduated with distinction and was immediately accepted into the Rimsky-Korsakov Choral College where she studied Choral Conducting, Piano and Singing. In 1984, Natalia entered the prestigious Leningrad State Conservatory as a Choral Conducting student of Tatiana Nemkina. Thereafter, she enrolled in the conservatory’s Vocal Studies department, graduating from Valentina Maximova’s class in 1994 with specializations in Solo-Chamber and Operatic Singing.

She was the Conductor of the Musical Comedy Theatre Choir of the Lenigrad Naval Academy, and since 1989, she has been a soloist of the famous St Petersburg Chamber Choir under the direction of Nikolai Komev. With them, she has performed with numerous orchestras – New York, Berlin and Rotterdam Philharmonics. As a soloist, she has worked with conductors such as, Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Semyon Bychkov, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Sir George Solti.

 

Ms Natalia has recorded 10 CDs with Phillips Classic as a soloist in the St Petersburg Chamber Choir which has given her the Grammy Award and the Golden CD Award.

 

Ms Natalia has been active on the operatic stage and has appeared in various roles from selected number of operatic favourites including ‘Le nozze di Figaro’, Eugene Onegin’ and War and Peace’.

Ms Natalia is teaching vocal and piano at Phuket School of Music.

 

Mr Alexander Korniev

 

Born in Ukraine, Mr Alexander started learning the violin when he was 5. In 2001 he was admitted to the Kharkiv Specialized Music School where he studied with Prof. Vladimir Svichkarenko. He continued his studies at the Kiev National Music Academy with Prof. Olga Ryvnyak. In 2013 Mr Alexander enrolled Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore to the class of Professor Qian Zhou. In 2012, he won 4th prize in Lysenko International Competition in Ukraine. In 2016 Oleksandr won Grand Prix of Astana International Violin Competition in Kazakhstan and 1st prize at Futian International Violin Competition in China. In 2017 he won major prizes at Zhuhai International Violin and Piano Competition and Chengdu Invitational Violin Competition. In 2018 Korniev won 3rd prize at Singapore International Violin Competition.

 

Mr Kerim Vergazov

 

Mr Kerim Vergazov was born in St.Petersburg. He received his master degree in piano from the Leningrad State Conservatory. He was awarded the first prize at the Sergei Rachmaninov Piano competition in 1985 and the first prize at International Music Competition in Kiev and Lvov (Ukraine) in 2000.

As a soloist Mr Kerim has performed with the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony, National Symphony of Kazakhstan and St. Petersburg Opera House. He has also performed with world class conductors such as Tugan Sohiev, Nikolai Gribanov and Andrew Vasilevsky.

Since 2004, he has taught at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at National University of Singapore as senior lecturer, pianist in Prof Qian Zhou violin studio and chamber music and accompaniment class instructor.

 

Together with SSO virtuosos he created Concert Series of classical music called “From Russia with love”. Also he is an art director and regular coach of the professional musician group “Viva la Musica! Tokyo” since 2009.

 

Mr Kerim is regular member of different music festivals and a jury member of competitions in Greece and Hong Kong. Currently, he is giving worldwide recitals and leads masterclasses enthusiastically in solo piano playing and chamber music in such countries as Russia, Singapore, Australia, Greece, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand and Japan.
